Basket making courses

One or two day hands-on willow courses to make beautiful baskets run by Out to Learn Willow.

Participants are shown how to weave with dried willow using a variety of traditional weaving techniques. Full instructions and materials are provided. Suitable for complete beginners and intermediates.

All courses start at 10.00am and finish at 4.30pm unless otherwise stated, the price includes all materials used. Tea & coffee are provided but you'll need to bring a packed lunch or adjourn to the local pub.
 

BASKETRY FOR BEGINNERS
Great introduction into basket making. Courses are suitable for complete beginners.

SMALL ROUND BASKET
Make a small, stake and strand willow basket in a day using a variety of different willow.

BEGINNERS FRAME BASKET
Make a frame basket in a day using a variety of different willow. Lovely as a garden trug or egg collecting basket.

BASKETRY FOR IMPROVERS
Courses designed to improve basket making skills featuring a variety of basket styles. Courses are suitable for participants who have some basket making experience.

IRISH SKIB
Make a traditional Irish Skib. a low, flat circular basket that was used mainly for straining and serving potatoes. The baskets have a decorative, openwork centre.

SQUARE LOG BASKET
This course will teach square and rectangular bases, how to work with larger weaving material, square corners and a square border to produce a rectangular log basket. There will be the opportunity to learn weaving with corner posts if you wish.

TRADITIONAL WELSH BASKET - THE CYNTELL
A two day course taught by Les Llewelyn who originally learnt to make the Cyntell with DJ Davies.

The first day will be spent making the Cyntell hoops and preparation of ribs using formas. The second day will be learning how to weave the Cyntell using traditional methods.

Tuition is based in Les's workshop in Bridgend and costs 150 for the two day course. Price includes all materials used. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
